Chris Parsons is a keen photographer, showing landscapes and images from delightful Suffolk.

Chris is sharing the space with abstract artist, the former head of Lowestoft School of Art Richard Parsons.  Richards works are shown in print format, and cover his vast career as an artist.

Richards work covers the vast quality of East anglian skies, mixed with realism and abstract, shown through application, the use of a line or texture.

OLYMPICS 2012

In 1982 Chelsea Fine art alumnus Kevin Whitney was appointed by The British Olympic Association to become the first official Olympic Artist for any country in the history of the modern olympics.

He supports many charities for children, and is heavily behind the paralympics.

The Upstairs Gallery are proud to announce that we will be showing the works of Kevin Whitey alongside the Olympics and Paralympics August 1st – September 8th.

Dick says of his work ‘you cannot deny the pleasure of making something, albeit inspired by other sources or developed spontaneously from the recesses of the mind…however you look at it, painting provides us freedom and space from everyday issues, as we waltz, spin and dance to the end.

The gallery owner and the volunteers here are unpaid, and work extremely hard to support students through to professional artists who need and appreciate backing in the arts and its many formats. We do not want to see, talented individuals be left by the wayside due to the worlds current clime. We would like to see artist get support and payment for their work and talents.

There are many ways to help us keep the commitment to the arts valid. Advertising costs are immense, insurance costs, even the pr licensing is of benefit. The Own-art scheme, credit card facilities, lighting, all are costs to be covered.

However, it was not until 3 years ago, going round an open studios event that Imogen got the chance as there was a potter who gave classes. She now has her own studio that her husband has transformed from the summer house, which had been collecting junk; complete with its own wheel and kiln.

Imogen’s work is inspired by what she see’s around her in rural Norfolk and from her imagination. She loves colour, especially those reminiscent of autumn when the hedgerows around us go from soft lilac hues to bright red. Because of the closeness to the Suffolk coast, the sea is another source of inspiration. Imogen believes her work reflects her personality, slightly quirky and based on not only what she sees around her, but also images from her inner self. She loves making colourful slab built houses and beach huts, imaginative sculptures and colourful textural bowls.

Professional artist, John Patchett well known for his fresh, vibrant pastel paintings.

He studied at Grimsby School of Art, Kingston upon Thames College of Art and Brighton College of Art, between 1965 and 1971. Settled in Adelaide, Australia where he lived and worked for 19 years. During this period he returned to England regularly to paint and exhibit his work.

Besides holding over 30 successful solo shows in Australia and England, John’s pastel paintings have been exhibited in exhibitions in Japan, New Zealand and with the “Pastel Society”, “The Royal Society of Marine Artists” and the 1997 “Laing Exhibition” at the Mall Galleries, in London.
John has now returned permanently to this country and lives in the East Anglian market town of Beccles, which is conveniently situated to have easy access to a variety of landscape, garden, city and marine subject matter.

He firmly believes that it is necessary to paint, as much as possible, in ‘plein air’, which has resulted in his work having an immediacy and a strong sense of light and warmth.

John feels that the hand can never achieve anything higher than the heart can command, therefore he chooses ‘special’, and inspirational locations, where he can be enthusiastic about his subject and situation.
